Follow the lights, smugglers urge refugee boats leaving Turkish shores on the perilous journey across the sea to Lesvos, Greece. It’s left to Greek islanders to rescue the desperate, frightened men, women and children on board.
We meet refugees Mehdi and Wessam, who crossed to Lesvos in 2016 and now live in an overcrowded camp in the mountains, as they wait for Europe to open its borders. And we talk to Greek farmer Panagiotis Konstantaras and student Naomi Krauz, who, against the odds, continue to volunteer with Lesvos’ local search-and-rescue team to bring drowning refugees safely to shore.
